My diesel truck only cover 2600 KM a year.I have been using semi synthetic oil and oil change interval is 10,000 Km which is around three years. Is it too long? or should i switch to fully synthetic change every 3 years ? or just mineral base and change every 12 months which one is more economical and do less harm to the engine?

Thank you, Frankie from Sarawak

Frankie,

Definitely, do not switch to petroleum oil. Petroleum oils will oxidize sitting in the pan over time. The best oil for your infrequent use is one from Amsoil. The Amsoil15W-40 Heavy Duty Diesel and Marine engine oil is well suited for infrequent use. With extra rust and corrosion control (Marine rated) this oil will be better suited for the extended time with low mileage. Even with the Amsoil I wouldn't go past 2 years on the oil (you can do an analysis of the oil and go as long as you want). It is a good idea to start the truck at least monthly and let it come up to operating temp to purge the oil of moisture.
